Liverpool will have to pay at least £79m for new goalkeeper

There is no doubt amongst most Liverpool fans that after the Champions League Final we need to step up our search and actually buy a new goalkeeper.

Many fans haven’t been that impressed with either Mignolet nor Karius. Admittedly Karius had started to impress with recent performances, however it could have been down to the solid performances from our in-form back four, marshalled by van Dijk.

Frustratingly, when called upon Karius has been inconsistent, pulling out ‘worldie’ saves, then dropping a clanger in the Champions League Final.

Alisson Becker

For a long time we have been linked with Alisson from Roma, who reportedly are resisting Liverpool’s advances until after the World Cup. However, they would expect to get around £79m for the Brazil goalkeeper should they ultimately agree to sell him.

Whilst we haven’t actually made an official approach for Alisson, reports suggest we have contacted Roma in regards to his availability.

Naturally Roma are desperate to keep hold of Alisson, who has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in world football since joining the Italian club from Internacional in 2016.

Roma hold all the cards at the moment as his current contract runs until June 2021 and are under financial pressure to sell him. The issue we may have is the purchase of Mohammed Salah, who has proved to be a sensation this season. So much so that you get the feeling Roma feel we ‘ripped’ them off last year with such a low fee. They will clearly want a form of compensation and may demand more as a result! This may inadvertently drive the price up.

Jan Oblak

Another player linked with Liverpool is Atletico Madrid Goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Unlike Roma who don’t want their keeper to leave, the Europa League winners are convinced that either Liverpool or Arsenal will come calling with an offer that they cannot refuse.  In fact they are so convinced that their star gloveman is set to leave, that reports suggest they have already identified his replacement – Kepa Arrizabalaga of Athletic Bilbao, valued at £70m.

Oblak is one of the most highly-rated goalkeepers in Europe and has an astonishing clean-sheet record for Atletico. The Slovenian stopper made 29 shutouts in 49 games last season, conceding just 28 goals along the way.

Further stories in The Mirror suggest that Jurgen Klopp prefers Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker, however Liverpool chiefs would love to make Oblak their new No 1 for next term.

Regardless of who they choose Liverpool would have to smash their transfer record to sign either of them. Rama will seek retribution and Oblak has a massive £89million release clause.
