Liverpool have reportedly completed the signing of Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson from AS Roma, ending a long-running transfer saga and breaking the world record fee paid for a stopper.
The fee is reported to be €75m including add-ons, with the 25-year-old signing a five-year deal at Anfield worth a reported £5.5m per year.
The Brazil international, whokept Manchester City’s Ederson out of Brazil’s World Cup squad has been one of the club’s top transfer targets this summer and stories broke on Tuesday that Liverpool had submitted their first formal offer for the 25-year-old shot-stopper. A deal has been agreed between all parties – with the transfer all done subject to a medical, which is expected to be completed on Saturday.
Further reports suggest Alisson has already packed his bags and is just waiting for the all-clear from Roma before leaving to complete his medical having spoken to Jurgen Klopp on Tuesday to discuss a deal.
It was thought that Klopp was going to give Karius another chance as Liverpool quickly denied they had made a move for Alisson. However, behind the scenes talks between the two clubs continued and an agreement has since been reached over the high-profile transfer.
It had been suggested that Real Madrid were interested in signing Alisson, however it appears they have their sights set on Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois following his performances at the World Cup. It was understood this would prompt Chelsea to submit an offer for Allison, which thankfully never came.
World record breakers
Liverpool have now broken world records for the highest fees spent on a goalkeeper and a defender in the last year, a startling turnaround for Jurgen Klopp, who said last summer: “Other clubs can go out and spend more money and collect top players. I want to do it differently. I would even do it differently if I could spend that money.”
The two clubs are now believed to be discussing how the payments will be made before an official announcement is made this summer, but Romano claims in the Guardian that Liverpool are already making arrangements for Alisson to complete his medical.
What changed Klopp’s mind?
Not since Pepe Reina have Liverpool possessed a world-class No 1, with Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius both failing to live up to expectations.
It is almost certain that Mignolet will be shown the door this summer with the Belgium international keen to pursue a new challenge elsewhere. Karius received public backing from Klopp in the wake of his horrendous Champions League final display.
However the German allowed a shot to spill through his hands, with one Tranmere player screaming “you’re f****** s***” by way of response. Karius appears to be a broken man and Liverpool, who are targeting Premier League glory, are now preparing to be ruthless.
Alisson has forged a reputation as one of the best goalkeepers on the planet. Klopp knows this and isn’t afraid to make the tough decisions and spend big when needed.
Alisson will become the club’s fourth signing of the current transfer window, following Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri through the doors at Anfield this summer.
